How to Register for OAP in Ontario

Last verified: April 2026. Always confirm details on the official page.

How do I register for the Ontario Autism Program

Register through AccessOAP the same day your child receives a written ASD diagnosis. You can register online at accessoap.ca, by phone, or with a paper form. Registration takes a few minutes if your documents are ready. Invitations for Core Clinical are based on your child's OAP registration date.

Registration is intake, not funded services

Registering with AccessOAP puts your child in line for a future Core Clinical invitation. It does not mean Core Clinical funding has started. Funded Core Clinical services begin only after you receive an invitation, complete a Determination of Needs assessment, and find a provider with availability. Foundational Family Services and other OAP supports are available to registered families in the meantime.

What you need before starting

  • Written ASD diagnosis from a qualified professional
  • Proof your child lives in Ontario
  • Proof your child is under 18

This page focuses on the registration process itself. For funding amounts, what Core Clinical covers, the waitlist, and what to do while waiting, see the full OAP Core Clinical guide.

What documents do I need to register for OAP

Required documents

  1. Written ASD diagnosis— must include your child's full name, date of birth, date of assessment, a clear statement that your child meets ASD diagnostic criteria, and the assessing professional's name and credentials.
  2. Proof of Ontario residency — school enrollment, utility bill, or government correspondence showing an Ontario address.
  3. Proof of age — birth certificate, passport, or health card showing your child is under 18.

What counts as a valid diagnosis for OAP registration

The diagnosis must be in writing and come from a qualified professional. AccessOAP accepts diagnoses from:

  • Registered psychologists
  • Psychological associates
  • Physicians (pediatricians, developmental pediatricians, psychiatrists, family doctors)
  • Nurse practitioners

The written diagnosis must include

  • Your child's full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Date of assessment
  • A clear statement your child meets ASD diagnostic criteria
  • The professional's name, credentials, and registration number

Verbal diagnosis is not enough

A verbal confirmation from your doctor is not accepted. You need the diagnosis in writing. If you received a verbal diagnosis, ask for a written report or letter confirming the ASD diagnosis.

What are the three ways to register with AccessOAP

Online (fastest)

Go to accessoap.ca. Create an account. Upload your child's diagnosis and supporting documents. You get a confirmation email.

By phone

Call 1-833-425-2445, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm ET. A staff member walks you through the process and tells you how to submit documents.

Paper form

Download the registration form from the AccessOAP website. Fill it out and submit it with copies of your documents. This is the slowest option.

Register the day you get a written diagnosis

Invitations are based on your child's OAP registration date. Many families wait a long time for an invitation; exact wait times are not published and can vary. Register once you have a written ASD diagnosis.

What happens after I register with AccessOAP

  1. You receive an AccessOAP account and are assigned a care coordinator. Your care coordinator is your contact for questions about your registration.
  2. You wait for a Core Clinical invitation. Invitations are based on your child's OAP registration date. Many families wait a long time; exact wait times are not published and can vary.
  3. When your invitation arrives, you complete a Determination of Needs assessment that sets your funding level.
  4. You choose your own providers and start services. The OAP Provider List (oapproviderlist.ca) is one place to look; the list is voluntary, so qualified regulated providers may not appear on it. Even after invitation, you may face provider waitlists.

While you wait, you have access to Foundational Family Services (free, no invitation needed) and can apply for SSAH (separate program, respite and daily supports).

Common mistakes when registering for OAP

Waiting for the 'final' diagnostic report. If you have a written diagnosis, register now. You can update documents later. Invitations are based on your child's OAP registration date.
Not realizing registration and invitation are different. Registration puts your child in the queue. An invitation comes later. Many families wait a long time, and exact wait times are not published. Do not confuse the two.
Thinking OAP registration covers everything. OAP registration does not include SSAH, DTC, or school supports. Those are separate applications. Apply for all of them.
Missing diagnosis document requirements. If the diagnosis letter is missing your child's name, assessment date, or the professional's credentials, registration can be delayed. Check the letter before submitting.
